ETHNIC MINORITY ACHIEVEMENT (EMA)
AND ENGLISH AS ADDITIONAL LANGUAGE (EAL)
SUPPORT FOR STUDENTS
Mr Hartavellas EMAG Teacher and Coordinator

Our aim is to support effectively the achievement of students who are minority ethnic or are learning English as Additional Language (EAL) in order to receive consistently good experiences at Willowfield. We also work to enhance the school’s tradition of valuing ethnic, cultural and linguistic diversity.

Willowfield is an ethnically diverse school, representative of the community that it serves. We welcome this diversity as enriching the life of the school and we are committed to promoting an awareness of its richness and breadth.

Did you know that more than half of our students use with various degrees of fluency more than 50 home languages other than English? In Room 34 and also the library you can find bilingual dictionaries and dual text literature.  Remember that the school also arranges interpreting for parents and carers.

The Ethnic Minority Achievement staff is there to help you achieve well in the lessons, in your exams and in you life! They are available to help students in the lessons, during homework clubs, during lunchtimes and after school.

Parents are invited to school for formal and informal meetings. The EMA Co-ordinator, Mr Hartavellas, is always willing to talk to parents about their child’s progress.

Willowfield’s Successes

You will remember that we celebrated Black History Month in October, with special events and activities to commemorate the contribution that black people and their communities have made to our multi-cultural society.

As part of the celebrations, Mr Hartavellas put together a top team of students to represent our school in the Waltham Forest Black History Month Quiz. Willowfield competed against other schools in the borough, answering questions which tested their knowledge of Black History.

The competition was tough. Each school had two teams and Kelmscott’s Team 2 won the quiz with 74%. Our Willowfield Wonders did fabulously, however, with our Team 2 coming joint second with Holy Family and Team 1 coming in close at fourth place.

Patricia Edwards, who organised the quiz, commented, “Thank you for bringing your teams to the quiz today.  Please pass on my thanks to the pupils for their enthusiastic participation and lovely behaviour.”

Congratulations to both our terrific teams who did us proud!
