Welcome to the English Department Page

Here you will find lots of news, upcoming events, examples of excellent work and much more.

In English our main aim is to enable you to read, write, speak and listen effectively, to help you gain understanding of and control over language and therefore help you make progress in all of your subjects!

There's lots of enjoyable, fun, imaginative, engaging and relevant work being done whilst ensuring that they acquire accurate functional literacy skills. We offer lots of extra-curricular activities, from theatre trips to author workshops to Spelling Bees!  In addition, we are developing strong media skills, so remember to speak to Miss Evans if you are interested in becoming student journalists or film makers.

As you know, Willowfield has specialist school status in Humanities, with English as the lead subject. This means that Willowfield’s English Department was recognised as a leading Department in the school and key to raising standards of literacy across the curriculum.  It also means there are lots of amazing opportunities available to you.

Willowfield School celebrated International Literacy Day in style on Wednesday 8th September 2010. We had a brilliant book sale from 12:55 to 13:40 in the library were books were on sale for as little as 10p!
Kier in year 7 commented
“all the books are brilliant and cheap! “

Hannah in year 8 said
“It’s a great opportunity to read books as they are cheap”

Patrycja in year 10 remarked
“I like that there are different books to be bought”

A pleased Ms. Joseph, who organised the day, explained,
“It’s been a fantastic book sale, and it was great to see so many Willowfield students celebrating international day”

A huge amount of 80+ books were sold which should mean lots of lovely reading!

Mini Saga Success!
Congratulations to Faaizah Ali (9.2)

During the summer term, the current Year 8 and 9 completed a ‘mini saga’, a story in 50 words, during an English lesson. Their entries were put forward to a competition, organised by the Young Writers Organisation.

The competition received in excess of 20,000 entries from all over the UK and overseas and we are delighted to announce that Faaizah’s story Spine Chilling has been one of the very few chosen for publication in Mini Sagas – Creative Capers Hampshire and the South of England.

This is a huge achievement, well done Faaizah! Read her marvellous Mini Saga below:

Spine Chilling

A full moon. A pale figure floated over the water. Should I run? I didn’t know. I stood still, frozen like an ice cube. She was dressed in white. Was she a ghost? She was definitely there, wasn’t she? Dressed in white, glittering brown eyes. Was she a ghost?

Celebrating Success in English!

A very proud English Department would like to congratulate last year’s Year 11 on their fabulous English results!
68% of students achieved an A*-C grade in both English and English Literature, with 100% of students achieving an A*-G grade in English.
Some star performers were Ateeq Tariq with two A*, Eva Callard-Waller with one A* and one A and Jasmine Sultanah, Waqar Nasir, Usman Hussain, Fajar Raja and Jay Sandom with two A grades.

This is a hard act for the current Key Stage 4 to follow, but we are sure that with the same levels of hard work and determination they will do very well.
