An Outline History of Our School.

The oldest parts of the present buildings, the EAST and WEST wings were originally part of a primary school complex built around 1901.
In the 1960s Willowfield was first a Secondary Modern school and then from 1968, following the introduction of comprehensive education, a Junior High School for students aged 11-14. An aerial photograph showing the central block under construction is on the wall in the reception area.

During 1985/86 the secondary education of the borough was totally reorganised and Willowfield opened as an 11-16 school in September 1986.

Initially the school had only Years 7-9 but by 1990 had reached its full size as a four form school with nearly 600 students. Most of the teaching staff came from other borough schools and brought with them experience of both High School and Senior High School.

The years 1988/90 saw a major modernisation and building programme which culminated in the opening of the SOUTH WING (designed by Van Heyningen and Haward) in September 1990. The old Blackhorse Infants School which had been used as temporary accommodation for two years was demolished to create a new playground.

The major feeder primary schools are Coppermill, Mission Grove, Greenleaf, Stoneydown & Hillyfields.
