English

In English our main aim is to enable students to read, write, speak and listen effectively, to help them gain understanding of and control over language. This helps students progress in all of their subjects.  In addition we offer students enjoyable, fun, imaginative, engaging and relevant work whilst ensuring that they acquire accurate functional literacy skills. We offer lots of extra-curricular activities, from theatre trips to author workshops to Spelling Bees!  In addition, we are developing a strong media presence, students having the chance to become student journalists and film makers.

Willowfield School has been awarded specialist school status in Humanities, with English as the lead subject. This means that Willowfield’s English Department was recognised as a leading  Department in the school and key to raising standards of literacy across the curriculum.

Literacy

We strive to ensure that Literacy is a whole school policy and that Speaking and Listening, Reading and Writing skills are taught across the curriculum.

Every secondary school should specialise in literacy and set targets for

improvement in English. Similarly, every teacher should contribute to promoting

it… In shaping their plans it is essential that secondary schools do not see work

on reading and writing as exclusively the province of a few teachers in the

English and learning support departments. (Department of Education)

Have a look here at the Literacy Marking Policy that we have devised and that is used in every subject to ensure that Literacy skills are being developed throughout the school.  You might want to use this document as a parent or carer, to help your child with writing or reading homework, or if you are a student, you can use it to help you proofread your work.
